WBTT Voices is an ongoing community forum about issues impacting society, explored through an African American lens.
WBTT VOICES: The State of the Black Musical
From the early days of Broadway to the contemporary stage, the African American Musical has told our stories, lifted our spirits and reflected our shared experiences. But how has it evolved and where is it headed next?
Join WBTT for a thought-provoking afternoon during our Voices program as we explore the state of the Black musical. Together, we will look at the genre’s history and its trailblazing artists, while diving into the deeper questions that shape today’s musical theatre landscape. We’ll discuss how style, storytelling and representation have changed or stayed the same, and consider who decides which stories rise to the stage. From well-known classics to newer works, this conversation will examine the creativity and cultural power of the black musical.
Attend this discussion Wednesday, November 5, 4:00pm at WBTT Donelly Theatre.
