American Roots

Welcome to a special edition of WBTT LIVE: ON DEMAND, as we explore American Roots: The Gospel Experience. The uplifting, inspirational musical collaboration of the Key Chorale Chamber Singers and Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe singers, dancers and musicians, was recorded live in concert by Bill Wagy Productions October 19, 2019, at St. Boniface Episcopal Church in Sarasota. Now you can enjoy this concert at home.

The two-hour video is streaming on demand now through Sunday, November 1. Tickets are just $25 per household. CLICK HERE to learn more and buy tickets!

UPDATE: Now you can watch or sing along with an open-captioned version of the video. If you select this version on the ticket page, captions will appear throughout the video, allowing you to see as well as hear the narration and song lyrics. Go ahead, sing along if you like! (You can see an example of a captioned song in the third video on this page.)

The original version without captions is still available. The choice is yours when you purchase your ticket.

Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe Founder/Artistic Director Nate Jacobs sat down recently with Key Chorale Artistic Director Joseph Caulkins to talk about how their two organizations joined forces to celebrate this incredibly moving and deeply spiritual American art form. The two directors share why they came together to perform the music at three churches in Sarasota County — and why they believe it’s important for people to hear its message now.

We hope you enjoyed Nate Jacobs’ visit with Joe Caulkins. Here’s a taste of American Roots: The Gospel Experience. This video from the performance at First United Methodist Church in Sarasota was created by Daniel Perales.

Click below to see a 3½-minute video clip from the open-captioned version of the two-hour full concert, as you enjoy compelling narration by Earley Dean, heartfelt vocals by Jai Shanae and her fellow WBTT singers, the soaring sounds of the Key Chorale Chamber Singers, and lively WBTT dancers, all performing the classic African American Gospel song, "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands."

CLICK HERE to purchase a ticket to watch the complete two-hour concert of 36 Gospel songs (including “Amazing Grace,” “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” “Oh Happy Day” and many more) at your convenience in our new, easy-to-use video player.
